WHAT IS THE VAGUS NERVE?

The mind and body are highly intelligent systems that work together to keep us safe, well and alive so we can be the very best we can be. According to research carried out by Swiss Neurosicentists several years ago, the Vagus Nerve (one of 12 Cranial Nerves and the longest) is the Leader of our Inner Nerve Centre ‘The Parasympathetic Nervous System’.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Vagus Nerve extends right down from the brainstem to the abdomen and like any good Leader, does an excellent job of overseeing a vast range of crucial functions by communicating nerve pulses to every organ in the human body. It controls subconscious body processes that happen without us even thinking about them such as our breathing, heart rate and food digestion.

INTERESTING RESEARCH

New research has revealed that the Vagus Nerve could also be the missing link to treating chronic inflammation, and the beginning of an exciting field of treatment called ‘Bio-electronics’. This could be a significant breakthrough for the future of medicine, as inflammation is the major cause of most illness and Auto-Immune Disease including Cancer.

THE MIND-BODY CONNECTION

As with any mind-body feedback loop, messages also travel downstream from the conscious mind through the Vagus Nerve (via Efferent Nerves), signalling our organs to ‘create an inner calm’ so we can ‘rest and digest’ during times of safety, or prepare our body for ‘fight or flight’ in dangerous situations.

THE ‘FIGHT/FLIGHT RESPONSE SWITCH’

In the fast paced, modern world we live in today, we don’t get chased by bears, lions or tigers. However, our body does react to stress by activating our ‘Fight/Flight Response Switch’ when we feel under threat, scared, pressured, overwhelmed and vulnerable. This can happen a lot in life and business, and is often referred to as the ‘21st Century Stress Syndrome’.

So to recap, please do make sure you use our ‘Authentic Business Coach Checklist’ for peace of mind, and to be as sure as any of us ever can be in life that you are making a sound decision:

THE ‘FIGHT/FLIGHT RESPONSE SWITCH’

INITIATING THE BODY’S RELAXATION RESPONSE

When our ever vigilant Sympathetic Nervous System activates this ‘Fight/Flight Response’, it releases two Stress Hormones called Cortisol and Adrenaline into our body. The Vagus Nerve then tells our body to relax by releasing Acetylcholine. Then it sends instructions to release various enzymes and proteins to calm us down. People with a stronger Vagus Nerve response are more likely to recover more quickly after stress, injury or illness.

THE POWER OF POSITIVE THINKING

Using positive self-talk and taking deep breaths is a quick and easy way to engage the Vagus Nerve and Parasympathetic Nervous System to calm yourself down. However, this approach works better for some people than others depending on their subconscious programming and active neural pathways.

A POWERFUL COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

Simply put the Vagus Nerve acts as a Translator between your gut and brain. Your gut uses the Vagus Nerve to tell your brain how you are feeling and vice versa, it’s just like using a Walkie-Talkie. So your gut feelings are very real and you should listen to them!

THE IMPORTANCE OF A STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM

As 80% of our immune system is located in the gut, this powerful communication system reinforces just how important it is that our subconscious and conscious mind programming is in sync and aligned with our goals (i.e. both parts of our mind are working together) so that they are positive and beneficial to our health and wellbeing. Any incongruence and negativity between these two parts of our mind cause stress, and stress can ultimately lead to burnout, illness and disease which High Achievers don’t have time for.

THE IMPORTANCE OF A STRONG IMMUNE SYSTEM

WHY HIGH ACHIEVERS ARE MORE PRONE TO STRESS

Many people don’t realise they are stressed or know what stress and anxiety even feels like. Whereas others simply don’t want to admit they are stressed, struggling to keep all the balls they are juggling in the air and feeling overwhelmed by life. This is typical of High Achievers who are actually more prone to stress than most because of the very fact they are constantly pushing themselves out of their comfort zone to achieve their never-ending list of challenging goals in order to realise their dreams. These High Achievers who dare to dream big and take action are automatically more vulnerable because big visions involve a lot of hard work, time, effort and energy and constantly push them to raise their game. This is why it is so important to identify and overcome barriers to personal and business growth and success and manage everyday stress more effectively going forward.

EFFECTIVE STRESS MANAGEMENT

Managing stress is an ongoing maintenance plan for High Achievers who want to achieve serious success and be the best they can be, and they know it! It’s a bit like a ‘Health Insurance Policy’ – you know it’s safe, smart and makes sense to have one in place. Taking regular preventative action ensures optimal health and levels of high performance are consistently maintained.

HEALTHY NEURAL PATHWAYS

It is essential to keep the neurological pathways (otherwise known as wires) in the physical brain healthy, active and finely tuned, reprogramming them as and when necessary. Hypnotherapy is the perfect way to do this. By activating your inner strengths and resources you can achieve your goals easily and fulfil your true potential.
